Drunk driving is a real problem with tragically real consequences.
People have been drinking since the first fermented beverage was brewed
over 6,000 years ago. However, until the first automobile was invented
in 1885, drunken people did not have the opportunity to pilot a steel
box on wheels, powered by extremely flammable fuel and capable of going
at extremely high speeds. Society has been wrestling with the problem
of impaired driving for many decades now, but people are still dying
because of it. In 2006 in California, 1,597 people died in
alcohol-related crashes, according to statistics released by the
National Highway Safety Traffic Administration.
